The Deal with Car Seats
As you may know we live in the Desert. It is not just hot in the summer it is cook an egg on your dashboard hot in the summer. These super high temps and car rides are not anything I was prepared for when I had a baby. Thought it may be nice to put a little tip list together for you.
Car Seat Tips
Until your child is facing forward I would suggest always taking your car seat out. Confused?? When G was rear facing I would bring the car seat inside the house or store when it was above 90 outside. A hassle, absolutely but those seats get so warm and the metal buckles can burn your little one. If you have the luxury of your car being in the garage I would just leave the car seat in there. If you vehicle is going to be sitting outside during the summer I would always bring the car seat inside.
Keeping the Car seat cool when running errands
If I am just running in for a quick errand I bring a large zip lock bag and fill it with ice packs. When the car seat is left inside the car I plop this ice pack in the car seat while we are gone. Simple and makes a HUGE difference. Even in G’s toddler car seat I put this pack in when we run out for errands in the summer time. Amazon also sells a car seat cooler and Car seat covers to block out the sun rays. I have not personally used the cooler or cover but they actually seem pretty awesome for us that live in these extreme temperatures.
Car Window Shade Tips
Get a window tinted cling or tint for your back windows. This makes a big difference in the summer time. We picked up a window cling from Walmart. They sell them everywhere and the one linked is on Amazon. The tint can be as simple as this or go and get it professionally done. AND don’t forget the windshield sun blocker. Park in the shade when ever possible, even if you have to walk a little further. Crack your window slightly when you leave. Lastly, if your car is hot, start it up and get that AC going before you put your baby in the car if possible if not as soon as possible.
Covering your baby in the car seat
Save the heavy blankets for another time. That just traps that hot air. This sounds crazy but I see parents with these super heavy blankets over the car seat when they are putting the baby in the car. If you absolutely need to cover the car seat with your baby in in in the summer I would suggest the most light weight material possible like a muslin swaddle. I never did this but I am assuming parents are doing this to block out the light.
Air flow vents and Fans
Remember if you don’t have vents in the back seat those little rear facing seats are little heat bombs. Try a portable fan that is safe for baby if they touch it. Another option which we use is the Noggle. We purchased the Noggle last summer and just wonder why it took me so long to find out about it. My first pick was a new car to have a vent in the back seat but my husband said, NO! The Noggle was a good alternative.
Hopefully, this provided you some good information about how to handle the summers in the Desert with a Baby. I always just used this rule of thumb. If I am hot, so is she. If I am cold, so is she. Stay Cool During the summer everyone!
